"Coming home”  without housing or only temporary shelter can feel like an insult to an injury after the struggles you have already been through. Pace yourself and be as diligent, patient, and resilient as you can be. Locating housing is a process that might be incredibly frustrating. You don’t have to do this alone!

Emergency Housing

St. Francis House

Provides emergency shelter in a limited capacity. 

  • Guests receive three meals a day
  • Are assigned an individualized case plan to follow
  • Have access to laundry room
  • Can use the client phone, etc.

Additional services:

  • Day guests (Free meals, case management services, and and basic needs to anyone in need) between 9:00 am – 12:00 pm daily. 

All clients must have police clearance (a blue card issued by Gainesville Police Department or Alachua County Sheriff Office) before receiving any services from the facility.

Alachua County Emergency Financial Assistance Program

The Division of Social Services provides one-time assistance with rent, mortgage, and/or utility arrears or current amount due with a maximum combined assistance limit of $1,750.


NOTE: rental, mortgage, and/or utility assistance cannot be combined with move-in assistance services. If approved for assistance, payment will be made directly to the landlord or utility company.

Meridian Transitions

15-bed group home for people with emotional disabilities, offering transitional housing for those whose disability results in conduct or behavior that may put their tendency at risk in housing arrangements with a lesser degree of clinical support. Applicants will complete a HUD assessment and eligibility.

Gainesville Housing Authority

Wait list are only open at certain times of the year. You have to re-certify once a year. Must have social security card, birth certificate, ID, proof of income, and snap benefits. If on SSI you must have a disability letter that has been updated in the last 60 days. They will most likely check for eviction history, so be honest. They look at criminal charges on an individual basis although felony charges with distribution many disqualify. Substance-Use Free Housing

Metamorphosis

Long-term, community-based, residential program for adult chronic substance dependent clients; many clients also have a co-occurring mental health disorder. Length of treatment can range from 6 to 12 months in the residential component, pending on their progression of treatment. 


This program is ideal for those who are committed to change, and are in a place to confirm to strict house rules and group process.
